SPConnector Troubleshooting Guide
Something not working right? Here are the most common issues and how to fix them.
Printer not printing
If packing slips aren't coming out of your printer, work through these checks in order:
Check PrintNode is running
PrintNode needs to be running on the computer connected to your printer. Look for the PrintNode icon in your system tray (Windows) or menu bar (Mac). If it's not there, open PrintNode and make sure it's signed in.
Check printer status in SPConnector
Go to the Printer Status page in your SPConnector dashboard. Your printer should show as "online." If it shows "offline," the problem is between PrintNode and your printer -- usually the printer is turned off, disconnected, or the PrintNode app isn't running.
Check the basics
- Is the printer turned on and connected (USB or network)?
- Does it have paper?
- Is there a paper jam?
- Is the ink or toner low?
- Can you print a test page from your computer normally?
If the printer works for regular printing but not through SPConnector, the issue is likely in the PrintNode connection. Try restarting the PrintNode app.
Check test mode
If test mode is enabled in your SPConnector configuration, orders will be processed but won't actually print. This is useful during setup, but make sure to disable it when you're ready to go live.
Orders not appearing
If orders from your store aren't showing up in SPConnector, here's what to check:
Check your Shippo API key
Make sure your Shippo API key is valid and connected. Go to the Configuration page in SPConnector and verify the Shippo connection shows a green checkmark. If not, try reconnecting with a fresh API key from your Shippo API settings.
Important: SPConnector needs your production API key, not the test key. Test keys don't have access to order data.
Check sync timing
Orders don't appear instantly. Shippo syncs with your store on a schedule set by the platform:
- Every 15 minutes: Etsy, Shopify, WooCommerce, Wix, Walmart
- Every hour: Amazon, eBay, Bigcommerce, Squarespace, Square, Magento 2
After Shippo has the order, SPConnector checks every 60 seconds. So there's a natural delay between when a customer places an order and when the slip prints.
If you need an order sooner, you can manually trigger a sync in your Shippo orders page.
Check the order threshold
SPConnector uses an order threshold to know where to start processing. If the threshold is set too recently, older orders won't be picked up. Check your Configuration page and make sure the threshold is set before the orders you're expecting.
Print quality issues
If slips are printing but they look wrong -- blurry, cut off, or the wrong size -- try these fixes:
Paper size mismatch
The most common print quality issue is a paper size mismatch. If your packing slip is formatted for Letter size (8.5 x 11) but your printer is set to A4 (or vice versa), things will look off. Check the paper size setting on your SPConnector Configuration page and make sure it matches what's actually in your printer.
DPI settings
If prints look fuzzy or low quality, try increasing the DPI in your printer configuration. Most printers default to a reasonable quality, but if you've changed settings or have a printer with unusual defaults, bumping the DPI up can help.
Content cut off
If parts of the packing slip are getting cut off at the edges, check that your paper size setting matches your actual paper and that you're not trying to print on a size smaller than the slip format. Also check your printer's margin settings -- some printers have wider non-printable margins than others.
Connection issues
Shippo connection failing
If SPConnector can't connect to Shippo:
- Double-check that you're using the production API key (not the test key)
- Make sure the key hasn't been revoked or regenerated in Shippo
- Try copying and pasting the key again -- sometimes extra spaces sneak in
- Check the Shippo status page to see if there's an outage
PrintNode connection failing
If SPConnector can't connect to PrintNode:
- Verify your PrintNode API key is correct and active
- Make sure PrintNode is running on the computer connected to your printer
- Check that your computer has internet access
- Try restarting the PrintNode application
- If you recently changed your PrintNode password, you may need to regenerate the API key
Network requirements
SPConnector is a cloud service, so the only network requirement is that the computer running PrintNode has internet access. Your printer can be connected locally (USB) or over your network (Wi-Fi/Ethernet). SPConnector itself doesn't need to be on the same network as your printer -- PrintNode handles that bridge.
Multi-printer routing issues
Orders going to the wrong printer
If orders aren't routing where you expect, check your routing rules in order. Rules are evaluated top-to-bottom, and the first matching rule wins. If a broad rule is listed before a specific one, it might catch orders you intended for the specific rule.
Example: If "All orders -> Printer A" comes before "Orders > $500 -> Printer B" in your rules, everything will go to Printer A because it matches first. Move the more specific rule higher in the list.
Failover not kicking in
If your primary printer is offline but orders aren't switching to the backup, check that:
- The backup printer shows as online in SPConnector
- The failover strategy is actually enabled (not just round-robin)
- PrintNode is running on the computer connected to the backup printer
Printer showing offline when it's on
If your printer is physically on but SPConnector shows it as offline, the issue is usually with PrintNode. Restart the PrintNode app on the connected computer and check the printer status page in SPConnector. If the problem persists, try removing and re-adding the printer in PrintNode.
